AR Drone Users Commonly asked questions. Worth the cash?

Yes without a doubt. It’s under the expense of putting a good 450 heli in the air and i believe the resell value will probably be good in case i get tired. No remorse on the cost per smile for me personally.

Inadequate range on wireless? I have yet to have the Wireless cut out on me, so it looks much better than promoted so far.

Is the camera slow? From time to time yes. It is sometimes quick and sleek and occasionally it stutters. Not good enough for FPV, add your cam system for that. Even so the video flow is enjoyable and thats precisely what this bird is focused on

Simpler to fly without camera but looking at it? Sure I don’t know if it is me and my heli flying habits, but I am primarily watching the AR Drone itself, looking at the screen only once I remember it has video on it

Better with a 2.4GHz system? Could be great to have the choice to fly with a 2.4 transmitter. Still can feel unusual controlling by tilting the iPad.

Good in wind? Much better than I expected at first. It’s kind of rough but usually hold up properly overall

Better at hovering than moving around? Better at hovering where we have a clear ground pattern. See those advertising videos having a wildly paterned ground? I think that is to get the most effective holding result with the down facing camera. It’s not as good on lawn, drifting within about a foot or so. Forward flight is apparently real simple, much better at both than I expected.

Breakable? Well yes and no. It’s going to break if you drive in to a wall. It is not that tough but it’s more robust feeling as compared to I feared it could be. I suppose it is going to hold up a lot better than your regular RTF little heli. Let’s wait and watch how it holds up.

Jeremy Wetson greatly loves Remote controlled flying as a hobby to engage in, because of that the AR Drone is like a dream coming true! If you are intrigued you can also check out this AR Drone video review here and see it in motion!
