Adidas Facebook And Twitter Trainers: Commercially Viable?

The 35th anniversary of Adidas Superstar trainers have been celebrated by exciting new designs of social media trainers. Popular sites Facebook and Twitter have received homage from designer Gerry McKay with their logos and characteristic colour schemes featuring on the trainers.

Designer Gerry McKay has incorporated major features of the sites including strap lines and logos to the shoes. First up is the Facebook trainer, which has a strong and bright blue and white colour scheme which is associated with the site. The Facebook logo is also printed on the back of the shoe and onto the tongue. “Facebook is a social utility that connects you with the people around you” and “Making the world open and connected” are two separate slogans which are printed inside the shoe. The Twitter shoe is a more toned down version with a light blue colour scheme and the famous Twitter bird logo instead of the text logo.

The designs are certainly unique but would the trainers be financially viable if they were ever manufactured? This is something that would need to be further researched by industry insiders but at this early stage they are not predicted to be created. Facebook and Twitter are a great way of keeping in touch with your friends but would you really want the brand in your life 24/7? They’re more likely to be a one-off novelty purchase for a birthday or Christmas that will soon be discarded.

Whether consumers will like them or not is dividing opinion. Some have commented that they love the idea while others would feel completely embarrassed wearing the shoes. In this day and age where consumers want more for their money, a good design just won’t cut it, and a unique function or use would need to be added to the trainers to make them marketable.

People are beginning to move away from brands altogether as they opt for cheaper alternatives, so adding yet another brand to an existing brand would indicate a higher price and out many consumers off, even if they initially liked the product.
